English

Though English activities, pupils at Oughtibridge Primary School develop ways of expressing themselves and communicating effectively with others.

The National Literacy Strategy is used as the basis for planning. Teaching and learning of English skills takes place in Literacy lessons and also is cross-curricular. Pupils can be found writing letters home as an evacuee. They could be writing a diary entry as a Victorian chimney sweep! Explanations and reasonings are given in Maths, Technology and Science lessons.

In Speaking and Listening, pupils are taught the skills of presentation, group discussion and drama. These are evident in class assemblies and school productions.

Pupils improve their reading skills and understanding through working in small groups during guided reading, shares sessions in the Literacy Hour, paired and independent reading and one to one reading with an adult or with a learning support.

Each year the pupils are provided with a wealth of visitors, such as theatre groups giving performances, drama workshops linked to topic work and professional writers sharing their expertise and inspiring the children. National events are promoted and pupils have dressed up as favourite book characters and brought in props linked to different traditional tales. Children are encouraged to participate in national and local writing competitions

National Year of Reading

2008 is the National Year of Reading. Events to celebrate this are being arranged all over the country. Oughtibridge Primary School is no different! We want to encourage everybody to read for fun. Each month will have a different theme/focus. The children and their families will be involved in some, if not all, of the activities and challenges. Below is a list of the themes for the rest of this academic year.

April - How many different types of reading material can you find?
May - Read aloud together in class and at home
June - Have a photograph taken of you reading in an unusual place
July - Create a classroom display all about reading
August - Read a sport related story (linked to the Beijing Olympics)
September - Write a review of a book read during the summer holiday

Happy reading!
