We are fortunate to be situated in a beautiful village at the edge of the fantastic Peak District National Park and try to take full advantage of what the environment around us has to offer. The children study the locality to establish a sense of place beginning with an understanding of the locality of the school, its relationship to the village and the area in which they live and gradually developing a global awareness.

We have organised debates about possible uses of local land and the implications they could have on everyday life in our village. Day and residential visits to Whirlow Hall Farm, Castleton and Thornbridge Hall allow the children first hand experience of the local environment.

Through topic work, all children have learned about the value of re-cycling in order to protect the environment. Key Stage 1 experiences include visits to Mayfield Valley Study Centre, and a 'Seaside' day, thus enabling the children to compare and contrast a range of localities.
