Geography.
Here at Oughtibridge School, Geography is taught through a range of topics that meet National Curriculum requirements. Cross-curricular links are made between Geography and other subjects, particularly Literacy, ICT, Art and Design and Technology.
We are fortunate to be situated in a beautiful village at the edge of the fantastic Peak District National Park and try to take full advantage of what the environment around us has to offer. The children study detailed maps of the locality to establish a sense of place beginning with an understanding of the locality of the school, its relationship to the village and the area in which they live and gradually developing a global awareness.
We have organised debates about possible uses of local land and the implications they could have on everyday life in our village. As part of a water topic, the children visited nearby Coumbes Brook and conducted a stream study and day and residential visits to Whirlow Hall Farm, Castleton and Whiteley Woods allow the children first hand experience of the local environment.
Through our topic work, KS1 children have learned about the value of re-cycling in order to protect the environment. Other experiences include a trip to Mayfield Valley Study Centre, a visit to Chatsworth House and a 'Seaside' day, thus enabling the children to compare and contrast a range of localities.
