History
At Oughtibridge School, History is taught through a range of topics that meet National Curriculum requirements. Cross-curricular links are made between History and other subjects, particularly Literacy, ICT, Art and Design and Technology.
The children develop a sense of identity by learning about their place in the local community before extending to learn about the development of Britain, Europe and the world. We draw on the history of the local area to provide resources for history where possible. We incorporated a study of the history of steelworks in Sheffield with a visit to the Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet, to allow the children to study local Victorian life.
We have exciting history days where children have first hand experience of what life was like in the past. A Victorian day allowed the children to sample just how different life was for children 100 years ago. 90 children spent the day in Victorian costume, experienced Victorian style lessons, playtime and lunchtime. A wartime day saw the children dressing in the fashions of the times and learning the dances of the era.
Visits to local museums and exhibitions help us with our enquiries and visitors are invited in to share their experiences and allow the children to question, reflect and analyse stories of first hand experience.
Our younger children are taught History through cross-curricular topics. Experiences this year have included a visit to Chatsworth House, traditional crafts such as willow weaving and dry stone walling at the Mayfield Valley study centre and a 'Seaside' day.
