Maths
At Oughtibridge, we recognise that Maths is an essential life skill and that without the basic Maths skills, children will be disadvantaged throughout life.
Maths teaching is organised around the mathematics section of the Primary Framework, though natural links with other curriculum areas are exploited as opportunities arise. All children experience a daily Maths lesson, which emphasises mental and oral skills as well as aspects of Number, Shape and Space and data handling. Written calculations in the early years are kept to a minimum where teaching concentrates on a sound understanding of concepts.
Maths lessons are practical, interactive sessions where children learn in whole class, group and individual situations. New concepts are consolidated through games, practical activities and investigations linked to real life situations. Where appropriate, the school’s ICT suite is used for lessons and the children use interactive Maths resources and games to enhance their Maths learning.
The children’s mental maths skills are improved and sharpened through a daily mental maths session which includes regular use of a challenge called ‘Sands of Time’. This is a timed challenge that focuses on the rapid recall of basic number facts, such as multiplication and division facts.
The Maths learning is embedded through working with teachers from local secondary
schools, Maths based theatrical performances, Maths theme days and weeks and 'Let's Get
Cooking' sessions.
