PSHE
(Personal, Social and Health Education)
PSHE helps to give children the knowledge skills and understanding they need to live confident, healthy and independent lives and to interact with others in a positive and productive way.
At Oughtibridge we teach PSHE discretely and as part of other subjects, but it also underpins the whole school experience. Children are encouraged to take part in a wide range of activities within and beyond the curriculum and to contribute fully to school life. We have an active School Council with elected representatives from across the age range.
This academic year we have run the following extra-curricular activities: Multisports, Gymnastics, Football, Street Dance, Line Dancing, Scrabble Club, Gardening, Recorder, Choir, Music, Cookery, Reading, Science, Orienteering, Basketball and Cricket.
Citizenship is an important area which we fully promote. As you will have seen in the Summer Newsletter, the ‘Green’ theme has been paramount and the children have had plenty of opportunities to consider how they impact on the environment.
Since January 2006 we have been involved in an exciting, national initiative, known as SEAL (Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning), which gives recognition to the links between emotional and social well being and the ability to benefit from learning opportunities. This project is helping to raise the profile of PSHE and providing us with training and resources to improve teaching and learning experiences. So far the response has been very positive, especially from the children.
This year we have developed further by holding small SEAL nurture groups. The children involved really enjoy the activities that Mrs Lawton and Mrs Ward plan for them.
The Y3/4 classes attended workshops conducted by Kate from Veolia. the children had a fun time participating in practical activities such as bingo, and recycle detectives! They didn't even realise they were learning!
As from June 2006, Oughtibridge Primary School is now a lead school in the Sheffield Local Authority in SEAL and SEAL is now embedded and forms the core of our PHSE curriculum.
Every child in KS2 attended a First Aid training session, and had the opportunity to practise what they had been taught. The children benefitted from this and also enjoyed themselves.
