Plan of Oughtibridge School - ‘LEARNING TODAY FOR TOMORROW’
Oughtibridge School is set in a six-acre site on the western side of the Don Valley. The site itself provides excellent opportunities for curricular work outside the classroom and for recreation.
The school comprises two main teaching blocks, the `Coumes’ and the `Don’. The Don Building is semi open plan with seven class bases. It includes a central dining/activity area, an ICT suite, a home economics area and a resource base. This building also contains the Teacher’s Work Room, the School Assistant’s office, the Staff Room and a Hall/Gymnasium with toilets, showers and changing facilities.
The Coumes Building now has four teaching bases, a literacy room and a beautiful square hall with a wooden block floor. It also includes the School Office and the Headteacher’s Office.
School meals are cooked and served from the kitchen, which is an integral part of the Don Building.
THE SCHOOL PRINCIPLES AND VALUES
Our Mission is to ‘foster a sense of high self-esteem, self-discipline, respect for everyone and a dedication towards the highest standards in all aspects of life’.
We believe that the children in our school should be encouraged to be eager to learn, in a warm and caring environment.
We wish them to develop the ability to read, listen and observe with understanding, using appropriate sources to extend their knowledge, and to communicate with accuracy and imagination through speech and the written word.
They should be able to contribute meaningfully to discussion, making balanced judgements and choices based on their experiences and information received from a wide variety of sources.
We aim to help our children to become flexible in outlook and approach problem solving logically, mathematically and scientifically when appropriate.
They should know the importance of self-esteem, developing the ability to evaluate their own worth, and setting personal goals appropriate to their strengths and abilities.
Our children should be individuals developing self-respect, and showing respect for others, basing their behaviour and outlook on common sense and a clear set of moral values, initiated at home and reinforced at school.
A HISTORY
The original school in Oughtibridge was built by the church in 1861 for pupils up to the then school leaving age, and it was organised in two separate departments - Infants and Juniors/Seniors - under their own Headteacher, who lived in the adjoining houses. Early in its history the school ceased to be controlled by the church and the building was leased to the West Riding County Council and administered by that County Council.
In January 1957, the new Bradfield Secondary Modern School opened in Worrall and 140 seniors with 4 teaching staff were transferred from Oughtibridge to that school. This left a four class junior and two class infant school. In January 1961, the Infant and Junior schools were combined under one Headteacher to form a six class Primary School with 180 pupils on roll. The roll gradually grew with the increase of housing developments and in 1966 Phase I of the new Infant Building came into use and at the same time Worrall J & I School closed and its pupils transferred to Oughtibridge. The Phase 1 Infant Block, now the Coumes Building, contained three classrooms with toilets and cloakrooms.
In September 1966, there were 232 pupils on roll organised into seven classes - three classes of infants in Phase I, three junior classes in the original church building and one in the Hengist on the field. To meet continued growth a temporary classroom, the Stevenson - was erected in 1970 adjoining the Hengist, to accommodate infants. The roll in September 1970 was 324.
In May 1971 a West Riding Mobile Classroom was erected on the Infant Playground and Phase II Infant Building came into use. This contained a dining/activity area, a hall with gymnastic apparatus, foot showers, additional toilet facilities and rooms for the Headteacher, staff and stock.
Over the years following 1971, the Infant `bulge’ moved into the Junior Department. In 1973 a 3rd Year Junior Class was established in the Stevenson classroom (demolished 1988) and the Infant class was displaced to the Dining/Activity area in Phase II. Again in 1973 a further Junior classroom was formed using the old Junior Hall for accommodation.
Following Local Government re-organisation in 1973 the school was transferred to the City of Sheffield Metropolitan District Local Education Authority. Work commenced on building the new Junior Department, now the Don Building on 9th May 1973, and the take-over after completion was from midnight 10th May 1975.
In October 2001 the Coumes building was remodelled in order to provide an extra classroom for the January 2002 intake. The dining /activity area, Head’s office, storage areas and toilets behind the hall disappeared and were replaced by a new classroom, a new Head’s office, a corridor, a waiting area, new toilets, a literacy resource room and caretaker and cleaners’ stores.
