School council is drawn from across the age range and meets once each half term. The children discuss a wide range of issues concerning their daily life in school and consult and report back to their classmates. The meetings have an agenda and are minuted. Two councillors meet with Mrs Munt after each meeting to discuss any matters arising.
We have already had two meetings this year in order to plan how the school would raise money for Children in Need. The children were very enthusiastic so I look forward to a lively year! The council brainstormed their ideas for fundraising and then decided on the final events which took place - Pudsey Bear biscuits to be sold to each child and the Pudsey makeover. The children enjoyed the responsibility of selling the biscuits to their class. The makeover was extremely hard to judge as so many children entered with brilliant ideas. In the end Mrs Revitt, the school cook, chose the final winner which was Jack Moy from Mr Milner’s class.
During 2006/7 the School Council contributed to many developments around school. These included:
- Provision of outdoor playtime equipment
- More musical instruments
- More plants
- Improved playground zoning
- Toilet refurbishment in both buildings (ongoing)
- More healthy eating options
The children were very excited when their ideas came to fruition. They particularly like spending money but soon understood that there are budget constraints and sometimes we have to save up!
Our next meeting will be to discuss plans for the Gardening Club which Mrs Smith will run during 2008.
School Council provides a voice for children in school and helps develop them as responsible citizens. Please encourage your children to take an active part by sharing their ideas with their representative.
